Leon Unemployment Rate Down in September, But Workforce Shrinks

The latest employment information shows that Leon County added 4,274 jobs in September, 2018. One year ago Leon County added 7,088 jobs. This month’s job gains follows a loss of 1,665 jobs in August.

The unemployment rate decreased from 3.6% in August to 2.8% in September. This is the second consecutive monthly decrease in the unemployment rate.

Despite the decline in unemployment rate, the number of people working has decreased when compared to last year.

The Leon County Jobs Report, listed below, indicates that 150,702 people were working in September 2018. This is 356 less than the 151,058 reported working in September last year.

Also, the labor force contracted when compared to one year ago. In September 2018 the workforce was 155,100 compared to 156,687 last year.

At the state-level, Florida added 145,000 jobs in September and the labor force increased by 73,000. The unemployment rate decreased from 3.8% in August to 3.0% in September.

The chart below shows that monthly level of jobs in Leon County over the last three years with 12-month average trend line. As the chart shows, the current monthly trends are consistent with the movement in jobs over the last two years. Also, the trend line shows a steady increase in jobs beginning in January, 2016.
